Your bike fitter’s tip: Check how securely your feet sit on the pedals!
Good foot stability on the pedals is essential for optimising pedalling efficiency and reducing the risk of pain or injuries caused by compensatory movements.
Over time, wear on your cleats and pedals can compromise this stability, sometimes without you even noticing.
A quick and simple check to perform before getting on your bike:
Take one of your cycling shoes without putting it on and clip it directly into the pedal. Hold the shoe in your hand and check the different movements possible between the shoe and the pedal:
- Horizontal rotation (float): a certain amount of rotational freedom is normal. The range depends on the cleat system you use.
- Lateral movement: excessive sideways play towards the inside or outside of the pedal can prevent your foot from maintaining a stable and consistent position.
- Shoe rocking: rotation around the pedal’s longitudinal axis (tilting inwards or outwards) can significantly compromise the stability of your foot and the entire lower limb.
Make sure to check both shoes carefully.
My tip: perform this check regularly, especially if your cleats show signs of wear. A secure connection between your shoes and pedals is essential to get the most out of an optimised cycling position.
